Civic bodies, DDA to come up with waste processing action plan

The Capital’s garbage problem has caught the attention of the Centre, which has ordered the municipal corporations and the Delhi Development Authority to set up waste processing units.
According to sources, Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung told Delhi’s municipal commissioners on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the authorities to focus on waste processing.
Processing and recycling of all kinds of solid waste, including construction debris and green materials, is on the agenda. “We will be meeting with the DDA next week to chart out an action plan. We will be asking for land to set up the processing units,” said South Delhi Municipal Corporation Commissioner Manish Gupta.
He said the civic body would be working out plans for everything from compost pits to C&D waste processing plants, for which the DDA would be asked to provide land.
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation, which already has two processing units at Bhalswa and Narela, will also be asking for further space, said Commissioner Pravin Kumar Gupta.
The country’s first C&D waste processing plant is run by the North Corporation and IL&FS in Burari. The plant is spread over seven acres and processes 2,000 metric tonnes every day, an amount the civic body wants to increase.
