Housecleaning includes activities such as disposing of rubbish, cleaning dirty surfaces, dusting and vacuuming. It may also involve some outdoor chores, such as removing leaves from rain gutters, washing windows and sweeping doormats. Without housecleaning lime scale can build up on taps mold grows in wet areas, bacterial action make the garbage disposal and toilet smell and cobweb accumulate. Tools used in housecleaning include vacuum cleaners, brooms, mops and sponges together with cleaning products such as detergent, disinfectants and bleach.

What does Municipal Solid waste means?

Any material unused, rejected or unwanted is waste. Most definitions of municipal solid waste do not include industrial wastes, agricultural wastes, medical waste, radioactive waste or sewage sludge. India generates 0.1 million tons of municipal solid waste every day or say about 36.5 million tons annually.

What are the various categories of municipal solid waste generated?

Municipal or household waste generally consists of two types of waste based on their degree of degradation in environment- Bio-degradable and Non-biodegradable waste. Biodegradable waste is a term used for waste which can be biologically (via micro organisms) degradable in due course of time i.e. food waste, garden waste, paper and egg shells, human and animal waste & cardboard boxes are bio-degradable waste. Non-biodegradable wastes are the one which take very long time to decompose biologically to certain extent or could not decompose i.e. metal cans, toxic chemical, bottles, plastic products and metal scraps are non-biodegradable waste.

Why waste is a problem?

Waste disposal in India simply involves rounding up the waste for different parts of the city and dumping everything in a landfill. Once a landfill is completely occupied, a new landfill is discovered in a different part of the city. The Energy Research Institute estimates that 1400 Sq.KM of land would be required by 2047 for municipal waste. Also it is a well known fact that land in India is scarce.

What can be done?

Segregation is a Key!!

It is imperative to separate the biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste. Biodegradable wastes can be subjected to composting which is a process of converting plant and animal wastes to humus by soil microorganisms. Non-biodegradable wastes then further have to be categorized on the basis of their toxicity. Wastes like plastic, metal, paper etc can also be subjected to recycling. As individuals, we need to realize that we do generate quite a lot of waste – we dispose of containers that can be reused and we throw away papers that can be recycled. We need to understand the importance of segregation of waste firstly and thereafter start practicing this segregation system at our local kingdom “HOME”.

GSS runs a “Waste reduction” program which basically facilitates the integration of informal sector waste workers into a formalized system managed by its skilled staff.  We organize collection of Municipal Solid Waste at household level by using methods such as door-to-door, house-to-house, or community bin service. Collection would be on a regular pre-informed schedule or by acoustic announcement.  GSS identifies and recruits local waste pickers, issues them I-Cards, uniforms and rickshaws to provide waste collection service, while acting as a link between the waste pickers and the communities.

How we handle your waste?

It is important for you to know how we manage your waste. We will collect the waste from your household and your various neighbors. We will take it to the nearest dhalao (municipal space for waste collection) and segregate it into the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste will be used for composting (if possible) or for animal fodder whereas recyclable materials out of non-biodegradable waste will be recycled.  By doing this we are basically trying to decrease the waste load on our landfills which are filling gradually in a faster pace.
